About Folsom
Folsom, California was previously named the Granite City, at one point in time and there’s more to Folsom than Johnny Cash. In April of 1946, and in 2019 the community of Folsom was 73 years old, and the year 1946 and the month of April was when Folsom was incorporated. However, but, while its namesake is shared with Folsom Dam and the Folsom Prison Blues that was sung by Johnny Cash, the origin of its name dates back to 1855. Folsom is much more than Johnny Cash, and so too thinks the manager for the Folsom Historical Society.
The name of Joseph Folsom was the namesake of the community of Folsom. Mr. Folsom, originally established the settlement. Mr. Folsom bought the property from the estate of a man named William Leidesdorff, who owned received the land from a Mexican land grant named Rancho Rio de Los Americanos. Initially, the plans for the settlement was to name it Granite City, as the result of the many granite mines in the region. However, the property wound up a legal dispute that was unfortunately only resolved after Mr. Folsom died while only in his 30’s. The executors of his estate renamed the settlement to Folsom in his honor. This somewhat showed that he only owned the property after his death, since he couldn’t own the land while he was alive.
Folsom was purely a gold rush community. Prospective miners arrived in the community of Folsom hoping to make their fortune. They were all chasing the classic goldrush story. In 1856, once the Sacramento Valley Railroad was completed, the community of Folsom experienced additional growth because the residents were more easily capable of getting to Sacramento much more easily.
Folsom would become world renowned for having the first powerhouse in the nation to send electricity more than some 22 miles to Sacramento and also from having one of the oldest railroads. Eventually, the Folsom Dam would be named Folsom as the result of its close proximity to the community of Folsom.
The Historical Folsom Museum is located in the center of historic Folsom and is operated by the Folsom Historical Society. This museum houses a delightful collection of treasure and artifacts that chronicle the settlement as well as the development of the Folsom region. There are educational and captivating permanent exhibits, all during the year as well as some three temporary exhibits that highlight the history of Folsom as well as the gold rush era. There is also the annual Quilt Show.
Preserving the past is the objective of the Folsom Historical Society. The Folsom History Museum records exist to preserve, collect and make historical documents and records and documents available for public research. The collection within the Museum illustrate the many different and various aspects of the rich history of Folsom.
In 1960, the Folsom Historical Society was established, in order to reconstruct the Wells Fargo and Company assay office and bank as well as to preserve the history of Folsom. Initially the bank was built in 1860, but is now serving as the Folsom History Museum.
The focus of the Folsom History Museum exhibits is about the native people of Folsom, the ethnic groups who contributed to this region, the establishment of the mining camps, later efforts at mining golds, and the founding of Folsom and the development of the powerhouse, prison, and railroad.
Amid the current recession, the Palladio Mall construction continues. During the 1990’s as the Sacramento suburbs spread out into the community, Folsom saw a rapid period of expansion. It wasn’t long before the community of Folsom became an affluent city after being a sleepy little town at one time. Many different kinds of stores and malls were established all over Folsom. The population was booming as Folsom became more centralized. The Folsom Dam experienced a major gate failure in 1955, which caused thousands of gallons to gush out of the dam before it could be repaired. After that, the two-lane Rainbow Bridge was then the only way to span the river. In 1999, the Lake Natoma Crossing was finished. This alleviated traffic congestion and smoothed the traffic flow across the Folsom Bridge.
In the year 2010s, work continues to raise the Folsom Dam by some seven feet for increased protection from floods. A related, although separate project is also underway to produce a spillway that would allow the dumping of water whenever a large storm should occur.
The community of Folsom has a bright future and a very rich history. While the old gold miners are long gone, their spirit isn’t. Folsom is a wonderful place to visit, work, play, and raise a family. In addition, there are many different wonderful, historic places to visit in Folsom. It is far more than simply a song that Johnny Cash once sang, although many of the old gold mining pioneers would appreciate that song.
