About Fair Oaks
The history of what is currently known as the community of Fair oaks started in 1844 as a portion of the land grand for the Rancho San Juan. A man named James Wilson, who worked for the Howard-Wilson Publishing Company of Chicago and a Brevet Brigadier General named Charles Henry Howard purchased the rights to what is currently known as the settlement of Fair Oaks in 1895. This settlement was mainly covered by citrus farms, from a businessman named Crawford Clark and a man named Frederick Cox, who was a Senator from California. The Howard-Wilson company promoted Fair Oaks as a growing and innovative citrus settlement and also promotes the settlement as one of their Sunset Colonies.
This was following the devastating freezes in Florida and Southern California, in addition to the national depression that struck in 1893. A great number of the purchasers were some of the other friends of the investors as well as professionals, and the Fair Oaks community was originally was comprised mostly of businessmen and other professionals, that included engineers and bankers and engineers.
Some 300 permanent pioneers resided in Fair Oaks by 1897, and they bought land in between 5 and 20-acre tracts. However, investments diminished as the result of the small number of farmers who made Fair Oaks their home. This resulted in the Howard-Wilson Company leaving the region. In 1899, a group of businessmen in Sacramento and Chicago who had an investment in either fruit or property in the newborn settlement as well as in Orangevale established the Chicago-Fair Oaks Club. They pushed hard on some other investors as well as the government. In 1901, they also helped with the building of a bridge in Fair Oaks. Next, in 1900, a faction of local businessmen, that included a man named Valentine McClatchy, incorporated the Fair Oaks Development Company. The promotors announced that Fair Oaks would become the crown of the Sacramento valley, right in the middle of California.
An efficient supply of water was developed by these groups working together. They persuaded the Chamber of Commerce of Sacramento, which many members were business partners from Orangevale who, in 1901, approved and developed the bridge across the American River at Fair Oaks. Simultaneously the leaders of the community were also able to convince the Southern Pacific Rail Road Company to construct a railroad line to the bridge. These days, the locals call the bridge The Red Bridge. Currently there is a trail on the Northeastern side of the bridge that some people traverse in order to enjoy the cliffs and watch the sunset high above the river.
Once the railroad line and the Fair Oaks bridge was completed, Fair Oaks grew rather quickly. The year 1902 brought the incorporation of the Fair Oaks Fruit Company and a warehouse was constructed in Fair Oaks in order to export olives, and almonds in addition to only citrus products. A Dr. R. Bramhall became the first medical doctor to reside and open a medical practice in Fair Oaks. The development of other services in the community were the result of the agricultural productivity in Fair Oaks. By 1906, the community of Fair Oaks had become the representative small town and featured a number of small grocery and dry-goods stores, a cemetery, a pharmacy, a lumber yard, a hotel, a bank, a newspaper, a blacksmith shop, and a post office all nicely situated along Main Street.
By 1910, two schools, namely the fair Oaks School and the Four Gables School and the Fair Oaks School were established. In 1908, the Fair Oaks Library Association was organized and in 1912 became a permanent library in Fair oaks. In 1918, the Fair Oaks Civic Club bought and established the Plaza for leisure and recreational and leisure activities.
Fair Oaks is only 174 feet above sea level and as such snowfall is uncommon in Fair Oaks. Occasionally, intense showers will produce a considerable amount of hail during spring storms and particularly cold winters. This hail can result in hazardous driving conditions. Although trace amounts of snow will fall during some years, the snowfall that does fall frequently melts upon making contact with the ground. On average, there are 14 days where the high temperature will exceed 100 °F and 73 days where the high temperature will exceed 90 °F. On the other extreme, there are 15 freezing nights each year and days where the temperature will not exceed 50 °F.
The annual average precipitation is some 18.52 inches. In Fair oaks, the average, precipitation falls on 60 days each year and almost all of this precipitation falls in the winter months. During the summer months, precipitation is uncommon and in January the average rainfall is some 3.67 inches. Monsoonal moisture will surge from the Desert Southwest on rare occasions, which can bring moisture in the upper level to the Sacramento area, which can result in increased cloudiness in the summertime, some thunderstorms and light showers along with higher than normal humidity. Usually in the months between late July and early September, monsoon clouds will occur.
