El Dorado Hills, California is located around some 18.6 miles away from the 1848 location of the gold mines Coloma, which provided all the encouragement the pioneers who wanted the California Gold Rush needed. A branch of the Maidu Indians known as the Nisenan Indians were some of the early inhabitants of the area, These Indians were primarily peaceful group of hunter gatherers that flourished on this beautiful location until the westward movement of the white pioneers arrived in this region bringing various epidemic diseases. To make matters worse these Indians didn’t have any resistance to these diseases. If these Indians didn’t die from the disease they expired to another plague that white settlers brought by the white settlers know as Gold Fever. Attracted to the area by the potential riches. Many of these Indians left their tribal way of life.
The region all around the El Dorado Hills developed very quickly with the discovery of gold in 1848. The area around Sacramento came to be known as the entryway to the mining camps and the gold fields in the west. At the time The El Dorado Hills were relatively quiet. Mount Tavern was also used as a stage stop in 1849. This tavern was renovated so as to serve as a remount location for the Central Overland Pony Express. These days, the location is acknowledged as State Historical Landmark 699. After the pony express was no longer in use, the leisurely way of life was reintroduced to the easy-going way of life back to the El Dorado Hills.
In 1869 a man named James Black purchased a homestead that included what are currently known as the middle parts of the El Dorado Hills and established a cattle ranch. Unfortunately between 1669 and 1871, the drought of brought disaster. In 1904, this land changed ownership many times, and passed from the Black family to the Joerger family. In the late 1950’s, El Dorado Hills West the land was brought to be used as a master planned area. Utilities were made available and some basic roadways were constructed. An 18-hole executive golf course was developed but only a few residential units were built. Nevertheless, up until 1981, there wasn’t much in the way development.
The difference between chance and exceptional planning was very obvious. A group of forward thinking investors bought the what was considered what was left of the under developed acreage of the El Dorado Hills in 1981.
