About El Dorado Hills
On September 9th in 1850, the United States Congress on approved California to be the 31st State. The first county seat was voted to be Coloma. However, some four years later it relocated to Placerville. In 1854, the first two men who were convicted of homicide in the El Dorado District Court were executed by hanging from the neck until dead in Coloma, which was observed by some 6,000 people.

Entering from the Utah Territory at Genoa in Carsen Valley Nevada into the California Territory was the county road named the Old Emigrant Road. The road eventually went into the County of Sacramento by first running south of Silver Lake to Sly Park 14, which is located just east of Placerville, and on to White Rock, Clarksville, Shingle Springs, and Diamond Springs. This was is the Emigrant Trail used by Mormon Carson and can be taken driven via Highway 88 close to Genoa and on thru Hope Valley, which is currently known as Junction Highway 89, just past Silver Lake to Mormon Emigrant Trail road, which is located at the Iron Mountain Ski Resort junction and onto Sly Park Road and Sly Road and then onto Pleasant Valley Road and finally onto the community of El Dorado, at the intersection with Highway 49 South.

Also, the old Coloma Road was heavily traveled between Coloma, Uniontown, Green Valley, Mormon Island, Folsom and Sacramento. IN 1851, a ferry that ran on the American River’s South Fork was exchanged for a truss bridge, while there were also some earlier bridges in 1849 that were washed away in floods. Some road districts were developed and supervisors were established to take care of each of these specific roads in 1852.

In the County of El Dorado, going across Highway 49 and Highway 50 is a unique story. In 1848, a man named John Johnson burnt a trail between Lake Valley at South Lake Tahoe and then onto Echo Summit. The most rapid and most direct route over the Sierra was Johnson’s Cutoff. In 1857, Stagecoaches crossed that way. Improved in 1858, Hawley Grade was improved in 1858 and constructed by El Dorado County down Echo Summit and onto Luther Pass Road. This effort was none too late since the because the 1859 discovery of silver in Nevada’s Comstock resulted in a mad rush east into the valley.

However, when the road was closed because of the wintertime snow a man known as Snowshoe Thompson used home-produced snow shoes and hiked in order to transport the US Mail to Placerville and Genoa, Nevada. In 1860 and 1861, the Pony Express riders sprinted over this route. Some private operators finished the road and converted it to a tollway in 1860. In 1895, the State Bureau of Highways was established and bought the road to make the first state highway. In 1923, paving was completed.

Originally, Lake Tahoe was named Mountain Lake and was also known as Bonpland by Fremont and then the name was changed to Lake Bigler, in honor of the governor, in 1853. Tahooee is the Washoe name that means big water and ever since 1859, Lake Tahoe was the most popular name and, in 1945, the name became official. Schooner sailing boats were being used by visiting tourists by 1865. A side-wheeler named the Governor Stanford connected Benton’s Stage to the south to the Central Pacific Railroad to the north.

The County of El Dorado County has some of the best water supplies in the nation. Generous rainfall at the elevations, which were lower and cold, clear water from the melting snow in the mountains provide both streams and springs alike all year-round. In 1850, water ditches were being implemented in Coloma. Other ditches and canals were in use by 1856, which included Weber Creek, the Iowa Canal, the Coon Hollow Canal, the El Dorado Canal, the Gold Hill Canal, the Union Flume, The Coloma Canal, the Deer creek Canal, the Chilean Canal, the Coray and Company Canal, The Rock Hill and Pilot Canal, the Negro Hill Ditch, the South Fork Canal, the Natoma Ditch, the Cosumnes and Prairie Canal, the Eureka Canal, the Mosquito Canal, El Dorado and Georgetown Ditch, the Michigan Bar Canal and the Cedar and Indianville Canal all provided water.
